Acorn Accelerator Day 1 - Caitlin and Snezana

Snezana -

The first day of the Acorn Aspirations Accelerator started off an a high note, which is unfortunately the only day which I can attend, but I left learning a lot about tech and the steps to creating an app. I was amazed at all the innovative ideas the teenagers had, particularly Watchdog, which is a brilliant app that chooses a movie/series or anime for you to watch!

The app development workshop was a great insight into what you need to think about when creating your app and was led by Pedro which gave great advice not only for business, but also formulating a pitch and speaking with confidence. Everyone was heavily involved and not afraid to share their ideas! I was glad to be amongst young people with such talent and that were so forward thinking- I definitely think the world needs more of that.

We also each created Github accounts and by the end were all able to create websites, pull requests and simple lines of code. I undeniably enjoyed this as it was very hands on and we were supported by various mentors who were skilled in the gaming industry, technology and graphic design.

My favourite part of the accelerator was listening to Rockwell Shah speak on Pzizz, giving us an inspirational speech and q&a about what it takes to create a very successful app and the tips we need to achieve it.

Day 1 of the accelerator was really enjoyable and insightful, I really wish I could stay for the whole two weeks! I believe there are going to be very successful apps which will flourish from this accelerator and the teenagers will be given a culminating experience which will grow them as young adults!

My first day at #AcornAccelerator2016 was AWESOME!!! It was great to meet some other female coders that I could ‘geek out’ with. At the start of the session the awesome @agagajownik did some warm up activities to get our brains into gear at 9:00am! Github was covered by @eddiejaoude who is an incredible inspiration and @RichardFrancis really helped me learn the basics of HTML and CSS, I can now head home and independently code a website!

I found the last speaker of the day @RockwellShah (CEO at pzizz) posed some really thought provoking questions and helped me in creating my lean canvas which was also covered by a workshop in the morning #LeanCanvas

Over all this has been the coolest coding event I have ever been to and I would like to thank @elenasinel for making it happen and generally being awesome!
